Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

Nature lovers and photo enthusiasts will marvel at the rich array of colors, diverse scenery and wildlife at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park! From its humble beginnings in 1994 with only the Woodland Trail complete, the Park has grown to a world class facility. Purchase your admission ticket at the Visitor’s Centre, pick up a Woodland Trail Guide and map which guides you through the Park. Start your tour in the courtyard graced with orchids and tropical plants. The main path leads to the Heritage Garden and traditional-style Cayman cottage, depicting how life was lived in the Cayman Islands in the early 20th century. Walk by the new Xerophytic Cactus Garden, showcasing plants and cactus which have adapted to extreme heat and drought. Further along is the Floral Color Garden. A series of gardens arranged by color, the garden is a year-round explosion of hues. Meander through the trails and end at the gazebo, a favorite for weddings and intimate brunches. Continuing along the main path, encounter the Park’s two-acre Lake and adjacent Wetlands. This tranquil oasis of 3 small islands offer a habitat for native birds and attracts bird-watchers from around the world. This path links to the Woodland Trail. In just under a mile, the landscape changes from wetland to cactus thicket, logwood swamp to humid epiphyte woodland, dry thickets to tall woodland with impressive Mahogany trees. Along the Woodland Trail lies the Blue Iguana Habitat, the centre for the National Trust’s Blue Iguana Recovery Program. The National Trust of the Cayman Islands began its work with these creatures in 1987, with an ultimate re-population goal of 1000. The Habitat has become a popular breeding ground for these fascinating reptiles (Cyclura nubila lewisi), who only two decades ago were facing extinction. Frequently found freely roaming the grounds of the Park, these “blue dragons” delight everyone. Call ahead for a special tour of the Habitat.
